Dear R2 Global Meshworkers
I am a positive, constructive kind of person, but sometimes it pays to simply take a hard look at the facts. Record CO2 emissions in 2010 bode ill for climate change- a 4 degree warming scenario is looking like a real possibility. We do not yet know the precise consequences of such a scenario, except that they will be disastrous for most species, and for us.
Record CO2 emissions in 2010 Bode Ill for Climate
The International Energy Agency has issued new estimates that show greenhouse gas emissions from global energy generation reached record highs in 2010. Energy-related carbon dioxide emissions in 2010 reached 30.6 Gigatonnes (Gt), a 5% jump from the previous record year in 2008. 2009 saw a decline in emissions due to the global economic recession, though that effect now seems short-lived. Noted climate scientist Lord Stern of the London School of Economics said: "These figures indicate that [emissions] are now close to being back on a 'business as usual' path." Perhaps these latest figures will spur action. While dignitaries talk and politicians dither, the planet heats, and we are running out of time to make the changes in our lifestyles and expectations that must happen if we are to prevent more catastrophic climate change.
What can we do about this? We need to become more active in applying pressure on the politicians and regulators that have the power to say no to coal, oil and gas. I would love to hear your views and suggestions on what works best in this regard where you are- please let us know.
