Conseiller du gouvernement britannique pour l'économie des changements climatiques et du développement de 2003 à 2007, De 1994-99 il a été Chef économiste et conseiller spécial du President de la BERD, et de 2000 à 2003, Chef économiste et Vice-Président de la Banque mondiale. Nicholas Stern a été Chef du Service gouvernemental économique britannique. Il est l'auteur en 2006 d'un rapport de référence sur l'impact économique du réchauffement climatique.

L'exposition "C'est la vie!" qui débute mercredi au musée Maillol à Paris.

Un crâne entier recouvert de mouches noires: c'est la surprise de dernière minute que l'artiste star britannique Damien Hirst a réservée à l'exposition "C'est la vie!" qui débute mercredi au musée Maillol à Paris.

Crânes et squelettes réinterprétés par de très grands artistes classiques, modernes et contemporains, se sont donné rendez-vous pour cette étonnante exposition sur les "Vanités de Caravage à Damien Hirst".

Célèbre notamment pour avoir réalisé un crâne en platine serti de 8.601 diamants -l'exposition en présente une photographie avec poussière de diamants-, Damien Hirst "nous avait promis une surprise", raconte à l'AFP Patrizia Nitti, nouvelle directrice artistique du musée.

"Nous pensions que c'était un gag. Mais l'oeuvre vient d'arriver et c'est une petite merveille. Même les dents sont en ailes de mouches", s'enthousiasme-t-elle.

L'exposition présente un autre crâne aux mouches de Hirst ("Fear of death") réalisé en 2007 mais le nouveau venu est "beaucoup plus beau car il est complet, avec sa mâchoire", relève-t-elle.

Mosaïque, peintures, sculptures, photographies, bijoux, objets: près de 160 pièces ont été réunies autour du thème des "vanités".

Au sens large, ce terme désigne les représentations de la dépouille humaine qui viennent rappeler à l'homme le caractère vain de son existence face à la mort inéluctable.

C'est le "memento mori" ("souviens-toi que tu vas mourir") des Romains, illustré dans l'exposition par une mosaïque du 1er siècle après Jésus-Christ. Elle rappelle que la mort met tout le monde au même niveau, le riche comme le pauvre.

Avec la religion chrétienne, fondée sur la croyance en la résurrection du Christ, les vanités s'épanouissent dans la peinture occidentale. Elles connaissent leur âge d'or au XVIIème siècle, après la Réforme protestante et la contre-réforme catholique. L'Espagnol Zurbaran dépeint un "Saint-François agenouillé" totalement absorbé dans la contemplation d'un crâne. Juste à côté, un Caravage sur le même thème souligne l'humilité et la souffrance de l'homme.

En Hollande, au XVIIème, se développe un genre spécifique de natures mortes -les fameuses Vanités-, qui donne à réfléchir sur le caractère illusoire des plaisirs, du pouvoir et du savoir. Dans ces allégories, à côté de l'indispensable crâne, figurent souvent une bougie qui se consume, un sablier qui s'écoule, une fleur qui va faner.

Au XXème siècle, avec les guerres, les totalitarismes et la Shoah, les représentations de la mort dans l'art reviennent sur le devant de la scène. En 1933, l'Allemand Erwin Blumenfeld réalise un photomontage prémonitoire où il superpose en transparence le visage d'Adolf Hitler et une tête de mort.

Dans les années 1970, l'idée de la mort perd toute trace de sacré. Andy Warhol réalise des vanités froides et acidulées. Puis viennent les années Sida. Peu avant de disparaître, Robert Mapplethorpe livre en 1988 un saisissant autoportrait avec une canne au pommeau à tête de mort.

Avec les années 2000, la représentation de la mort se banalise. Le crâne et le squelette envahissent le prêt-à-porter, les bijoux et même les jouets.

"Il y a toute une génération de jeunes artistes qui s'intéresse beaucoup à la mort car notre société occulte celle-ci", considère Patrizia Nitti.

Pour elle, "l'exposition n'est pas triste du tout". "C'est une façon d'apprivoiser la mort", souligne-t-elle.

So far, the Integral University ("Université Intégrale" in French) in Paris refers to a cycle of conferences organized by the French chapter of the Club of Budapest(1,2) based on an idea put forward by Michel Saloff-Coste. It is not an institute as such, as it is still in its developing stages. The idea is to organize one-day seminars on various themes in cooperation with speakers, theoreticians as well as practitioners. The use of the word integral puts the emphasis not on the integral movement, but on a common desire of being integral. With this aim in view, the systemic and transdisciplinary approaches are also considered as part of the same quest for integrality. While it is important to know the contributions of the most prominent integral thinkers, the members of the Integral University are not followers of any guru.

Over the past two years there have been six seminars; they dealt with the following themes: 1) what the integral approach is; 2) how to integrate it into our lives and actions; 3) education; 4) the social, economic and ecological crisis; 5) sustainable development; 6) civilizations from the future and the future of civilizations. The two next seminars, in 2010, deal with: 7) eco-life, eco-cities and eco-villages; 8) Asian and Western Civilizations.

The seminars consist of presentations followed by questions, mini-workshops, yoga exercises and musical interludes. The complete programs of the seminars, as well as videos, can be found on the Integral University web site (www.universite-integrale.org/).

The international symposium “Research Across Boundaries – Advances in Theory-building”

We are living in an unprecedented historical situation: never before have the global stakes been so high, never before has so much knowledge been intentionally produced and disseminated, and never before has expertise been bound in so many separate research specialisations. As a consequence, there is a widespread call today for knowledge and practice bridging disciplines, paradigms, cultures, and worldviews. And indeed, in recent years various advances have been made in boundary-crossing research that facilitate (re)connections between theory and practice, facts and values, history and future, sciences and humanities, East and West etc.

On this background, the international symposium "Research Across Boundaries – Advances in Theory-building" brings together, for the first time, around 30 leading researchers from more than 15 countries and as many different research areas. They are representatives of an array of contemporary integrative frameworks and research practices. The goal of the symposium is to foster dialogues among them and additional participants through plenum, small-group and open space sessions, in order to discover common concerns and stimulating differences regarding advanced boundary-crossing research approaches.

The University of Luxembourg, built since its foundation in 2003 upon principles of interdisciplinary, international and cross-cultural collaboration, is a most appropriate host for this symposium on advances in boundary-crossing research, theGrand-Duchy of Luxembourg offering a remarkably cosmopolitan context for it.
