Newsletter Week #6 Dear R2 WorldShifters,
BREAKING THROUGH APATHY & DENIAL FOR A RENEWABLE WORLD: Dealing with the Near-Extinction Scenario
Following the Copenhagen climate change talks fiasco, we are all experiencing climate change fatigue - been there, done that, got the T-shirt, yawn. A colder northern hemisphere winter has also convinced many that global warming has stopped being a serious threat. Nothing could be further from the truth.
The latest hard data on sea level rise, the most reliable indicator of global warming, is frightening: sea levels are rising at twice the speed of 20th century rates, 30% of this caused by ocean warming and 60% by melting ice on glaciers. Renowned climate scientist James Lovelock's most recent book, "Vanishing Face of Gaia (2010)", details these findings in fine and shocking detail- worse than the worst case scenarios of the UN IPCC. Lovelock's conclusion: we are on course for a 4 degree warming scenario which means extinction for 60% of species including near extinction for us human beings in the next century.
Hmmmm....the choice between near extinction and a renewable world... doesn't seem to be a hard choice to make, does it? Yet the media continues to pound us with so much hype and spin about climate change and global warming that it becomes difficult to determine what is real and what is not. Is Gaia going to get her revenge and push the world into a giant Lord of the Flies scenario or are spectacular technological innovations going to save us together with social innovation breakthroughs?
The bottom line is that time is running out, and it's time to get real fast...
We each need to take personal responsibility for acting in whatever way we can to ensure the renewable world scenario emerges, acting from our highest self and our greatest strengths. Could you live with your conscience knowing the consequences of inaction? Each of us can and does make a difference, even in the smallest ways.
This week we are offering Renaissance2 members and guests a unique opportunity to engage in a dialogue where we will explore what is really happening and how you can become part of the solution.
LET'S GET REAL ABOUT WHAT'S REALLY HAPPENING
On Friday evening, 19 February 2010, Dr. Robin Wood and Andrew Cohen will be exploring the implications of what it means to take personal responsibility and a leadership role in creating a renewable world. The event is being held at the EnlightenNext Centre in Islington, London. Not only will we be talking about this great shift that is taking place globally, but also, three important questions will be addressed, the answers to which could shift our world:
- How do we motivate ourselves and others to make the critical shifts and right choices right now? (for example, where are you and what can you do, right now?)
- How can we ensure that whatever personal practices we use to be more conscious in our daily life, help the rest of humanity accelerate their own evolution?
... and probably the most important question which, if answered, could change everything about change itself :- How can we drive a much greater degree of interactive reflection on what is working and what is not through our Global Media Mirror?
Space is limited and tickets are selling quickly, so please do not miss this unique opportunity. Reserve a place for yourself and your guest now. Dinner and refreshments are included. Special half-price Renaissance2 bursaries for those who are currently financially challenged are also available on request. To Register, please click here
