Climate and Peace

Dear Readers,

The People's Climate March in New York City is being heralded as the largest climate march in history. It coincides with the International Day of Peace, September 21. Climate and Peace might seem like two different ideas yet closer examination reveals they are deeply interconnected. Arable land, healthy soil, sources of clean water, fuel, and energy are all clearly tied to climate…and also to conflict, from ancient tribal disputes to modern global warfare.

People everywhere are waking up to the truth that nothing 'out there' is going to restore the climate or build peace. It's up to us. Join a climate action in your area, and one of the many events–live or online–celebrating the International Day of Peace.

Kosmos Project Director, Dot Maver, has been a peacebuilder all her career. This month she seems to be everywhere at once–speaking, advocating, witnessing–joining great peace luminaries Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Daniel Ellsberg, Deepak Chopra, Bill McKibben, and others. Learn more about Dot's efforts in this newsletter. We also include information and logistics about the March, the new climate movie Disruption, an essay on people power, and musings about the earth in words and pictures from friends in Norway.

The thin, fragile atmosphere of our planet, embracing us all, is a profound gift of Life. The thunderstorm, the rainbow, the sunset erupting in color, the morning dew – all are reminders of this beautiful embrace.  Let's come together in peace to help protect our precious climate.

The mission of Kosmos is to inform, inspire and engage individual and collective participation for global transformation in harmony with all Life.

In loving cooperation,

The Kosmos Team

Kosmos Project Director, Dot Maver is an educator and lifelong peacebuilder. She is Founding Trustee of the National Peace Academy USA and founder and board member of the Global Alliance for Ministries and Infrastructures of Peace and the River Phoenix Center for Peacebuilding…(more)

Dot Maver is playing a role in numerous events during the month of September with a focus on the culture of peace.

Tuesday September 9th, Dot is a panelist at the UN High Level Forum on the Culture of Peace. This day-long General Assembly High Level Forum is an open public opportunity for UN Member States, UN system entities, civil society including NGOs, media, private sector and other interested stakeholders to discuss ways and means to promote the Culture of Peace.

What to Bring to the March

Most importantly, bring everyone you know! Help make this the largest call for climate justice imaginable!

Bring things that help communicate the message:
- Make your own signs and banners and t-shirts and flags – be creative
- Carry signs or banners that let people know where you are from – what organization, what city or state, what country
- Remember: only cardboard tubing or string can be used to carry signs, banners, flags, etc.
- Music that does not need amplification is encouraged

'When it comes to climate change, why do we do so little when we know so much?'

How do we understand the growing environmental and political challenges of global climate change as well as the possibilities for taking action? Why are citizens organizing for the world's largest rally at the People's Climate March in New York City on Sunday, September 21st? Is this the generation that will finally mobilize to solve the global climate crisis? 350.org's new film "DISRUPTION: Climate. Change!" addresses these questions and more.

A group of Dharma teachers from Africa, Europe, Asia, Canada, and the U.S. have issued a statement describing core Buddhist insights into the root causes of the climate crisis and ways to minimize its potentially tragic consequences.

"Today humanity faces an unprecedented crisis of almost unimaginable magnitude. Escalating climate change is altering the global environment so drastically as to force the Earth into a new geological age. Unprecedented levels of suffering for all life on Earth, including human, will result. Significant reductions in greenhouse gases and other actions will be needed to reduce climate change to manageable levels. But more fundamental changes are also needed, and this is where we can draw guidance from the rich resources of the Buddha's teachings, the Dharma. This statement briefly describes core Buddhist insights into the root causes of the climate crisis and suggests ways to minimize its potentially tragic consequences."

By Maragaret Flowers in the Spring/Summer edition of Kosmos Journal:

On a snowy weekend in January, activists for social, economic and environmental justice from across the United States gathered in a Chicago union hall to plan a Global Climate Convergence: ten days of action from Earth Day to May Day. Many of these activists had never focused on the climate crisis before, being mired instead in fighting battles that loomed more immediately in their lives. Who has the capacity to worry about climate change when your community is hungry, cold, without shelter, lacks health care or is being poisoned?

During that weekend meeting, we transcended the barriers that typically lead to working in narrow silos and treading water while the oceans literally and figuratively continue to rise around us. We stepped outside of our particular areas of advocacy, connected our struggles, and forged a collective effort to take action together this spring and beyond. The rallying cry was that the time has arrived to join hands and change course.

For 100 days, Norwegian artist, poet and activist Åsmund Seip has kept a journal for the earth. Here are a few entries, with photographs by him and Birgitta Eva Hollander.

'You are nature. You have never been anything else. Never separated from nature, never a stranger to nature. You and nature are the same. Naturally natural. Expressed in human form. As you move around, nature expresses itself through you. As you.'

Be a Peace Builder: International Day of Peace

Dear Reader,

To some, the idea of world peace seems cliche', an idealistic fantasy. In the mainstream media we encounter a world awash in violence, division and the threat of mutual oblivion. We see the unrest and terrible suffering.

Most of the world's 'peace work' is unreported however – in the countless NGOs working to address the underlying causes of conflict, in communities working at every scale to create more resilient peaceful lives; and in each of us who rejects violence, commits to a path of inner peace, or simply 'touches peace' regularly in the beauty of nature, the play of children, the wonder of a star-filled sky. Then there is the peace work of the earth itself, quietly transforming from one season to the next, growing, giving, regenerating. Peace is not a destination or a goal, it is the road we travel, or as the Zen Master and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh says, 'peace is every step'.

The International Day of Peace (IDP) on September 21 is our moment to honor all these efforts and shed light on some of them for others to see. Kosmos Journal Editor, Nancy Roof participated in the initial meetings at the United Nations to establish the International Day of Peace more than 30 years ago. Along with Kosmos author, Avon Mattison, founder of Pathways to Peace, they were inspired with the global possibility of developing non-violent means to end conflicts and establish the foundations for building a culture of peace. The IDP has grown and now there are many events happening worldwide. We have listed a number of them in this newsletter.

It is sure to be an historic day with the People's Climate March coinciding in New York City. The connection between peace and sustainability are well documented. Peace has a lot to do with making sure communities everywhere have reliable sources of food, water and energy and can live free from fear.

Last September, Nancy Roof was invited to address the UN's High-Level Forum on the Culture of Peace. This year the honor belongs to our Project Director, Dot Maver. Dot's address will be featured in the Fall/Winter edition of Kosmos Journal. You can read Nancy's address here in the newsletter. We have also included an essay on the need for interfaith cooperation by Dena Merriam, essential in this climate of religious conflict.

All are invited to participate some way in this year's International Day of Peace. Just to sit in peace, light a candle – it's enough. And if you feel compelled to join an event, gather in a peaceful vigil, or roll up your sleeves and commit to peace work, we encourage you. It may not be reported on the evening news, but you are making history, or more importantly, building our future.

Deepest peace,

Kosmos

We have gathered a resource list of numerous International Day of Peace events from around the world. Check the websites cited frequently for updates and changes as IDP nears.

This is an edited version of the talk Nancy Roof gave at the High-Level Forum on September 6, 2013 at the UN.

'Thank you for inviting me to speak on the topic of a culture of peace—the number one concern of all humanity. We are here because we care. We care that people around the globe are in fear, are in pain and suffering. We are motivated by our deep love of humanity and all life.'

Dena Merriam is founder of the Global Peace Initiative for Women, a former member of the board of Harvard University Center for the Study of World Religions and the International Center for Religion and Diplomacy. She is co-chair of the Millennium World Peace Summit, the first summit held at the United Nations General Assembly for more than 1,500 of the world's religious leaders.

"There is no greater need now than cultivating a global understanding of human unity. Faith communities should lead this effort as our spiritual values, such as compassion, love, and peace, are universal and can bring us together as a human community. Why then is this so problematic for many religious leaders today? Why is religious identity more important than human identity at a time when the problems we face, such as climate change and growing economic inequity, are global and can only be solved through collective efforts? "

People's Climate March in New York City aims to mobilize mass action on the climate crisis

Social justice doesn't often result from spontaneous demonstrations or an impulsive rush to the streets. It comes from long-term investments in organizing, community building, and grassroots campaigns. Activism requires a lot more meetings than marches.

But now and then, it's the right time for a march. And on the issue of climate justice, we've come to such a time. The New York City Environmental Justice Alliance (NYC-EJA), a network of community-based organizations in low-income communities of color throughout NYC, has joined together with organizations around the world to call for a People's Climate March this September 20-21 right here in NYC. So start lacing up your marching shoes and I'll explain why now is the time for action.
