Tamera Newsletter, July 2011

Dear Friends of Tamera,

Water is life. Nearly 1.1 Billion people on earth do not have sufficient access to clean drinking water. 40 % of the surface of the planet is becoming desert. Investors are giving up on countries like Portugal, Spain and Greece because "without water there is no development." For years, we have been experiencing devastating forest fires and heavy floods all over the world. Those who call all these symptoms "climate change" declare themselves blameless and powerless and the problem to be unsolvable. In reality, all these catastrophes are logical consequences of human mistakes and can be prevented if we correct them. This includes overgrazing, clear-cutting forests, wrong dealing with all that lives, as well as interference in the originally complete and intact water cycle - increasingly, rainwater no longer seeps into the hardened soil, roots of plants dry out, natural spring dry up, and whole regions become impoverished.

The good news is that such landscapes can be healed. With the help of the visionary permaculture specialist Sepp Holzer, a model for this possibility has been standing in Tamera since 2007: The water retention landscape, with five ponds and lakes built so far, gives a convincing local answer to a global problem. It is fairly simple to build such retention landscapes everywhere on earth, thus recuperating the water supply on a global level. In Tamera we see it every day: When water comes back into balance, life comes back, too - and with it the possibility of supplying people with food, energy – and joy – on a regional level. Paradise is becoming reality again and we are learning anew how to cooperate with life.  This year, Tamera is going to take another large step in completing the retention landscape which will be able to contain all of the winter rain.

All those who deal with water and care for the future shall learn about this possibility. To make the knowledge about water – but also about other fields of knowledge like social and ecological sustainability – known we planned a series of events and courses for the coming summer.

Events in Tamera:

Eco-villages and Sustainable Living Conference 2011 - 7. Jul 2011 - 11. Jul 2011 in Tamera. We are proud to this year host the annual conference of the Global Eco-village Network. We await approximately 200 representatives from eco-villages and the Transition Town Network from 35 countries. We are particularly pleased about the high interest level from within Portugal itself, as the issues of sustainability and community building are becoming more and more urgent here. For special network partners who won't be able to participate in the whole conference we will have one open day during the conference.

Tamera Summer University 25th July - 3 August 2011 – entitled "How can the earth be healed?": We invite you to come together to study a realistic perspective for the future. May a powerful global alliance for a future without war emerge out of it. The earth can be healed - if we want it, we will manifest it! Read the full invitation here:

Invitation for the Open Day during the Summer University, Saturday 30th of July, 10:00 a.m. - 06:30 p.m.: Local answers to global problems – models for the future. More:

The Global Campus of Tamera, July 20th – August 31st: During this time of education and training for cooperation partners of the Global Campus, we expect about 30 peace workers from various countries - Colombia, Brazil, Mexico, Kenya, Israel-Palestine and Europe. All of them are people who are already taking on responsible roles in peace projects, communities and organizations. Through this course the preparation of the development of worldwide peace models will progress considerably and the planetary community will become more and more visible. The participants will have special training units: among other, the founders of the project, Sabine Lichtenfels and Dieter Duhm will teach on the subject of the efficiency of local models, the inventor Jürgen Kleinwächter and the specialist Thomas Culhane from Egypt on the building of decentralized energy systems, and the ecological pioneers Sepp Holzer and Bernd Müller on natural water management. More:

We want to express tremendous gratitude to all those who contribute to the study fund, which enables so many people from poor countries to come, among them members of the peace community of San José de Apartadó in Columbia, members of the band Poesia Samba Soul from Sao Paulo, Brazil and Philip Munasiya from Kenya. Philip Munasiya, who participated in another training last year and who is the leader of a large project for organic agriculture has a very special reason to come back to Tamera: "In Tamera I saw that it is possible to develop water landscapes even in dry areas – this is the knowledge I want to bring to Kenya - and then I will also learn something that hasn't been necessary for me so far - swimming."

Hope for Colombia, the 53-minute film about the GRACE Pilgrimage in Bogotá in November 2010 produced by Raphael Buenaventura is ready. The premiere took place in Tamera. The film is a portrait of impressive peace activists. It is a film that touches us and awakens in us a hope to construct a different future even in difficult situations like Columbia. We wish that the film spreads widely. The producer is still searching for financial support for the distribution of the documentary and for places where screenings can be organized. Contact:
